The Dragunov sniper rifle was designed by Soviet firearms designer Yevgeny Fyodorovich Dragunov between 1958 and 1963. It was the first sniper rifle in history specifically developed for squad-level sniping and long-range fire support, in contrast to the earlier practice of simply modifying existing military or civilian rifles and adding scopes to serve as sniper rifles.
